Day 1 of MVM23


And here we go!

This is my first time taking part in a gamejam, and somehow I thought it would be a good idea to start with a Metroidvania… what could go wrong am I right?

I decided to use the Metroidvania Month 23 gamejam to learn GB Studio as I figure it’ll help make me commit to to the project and make me feel like I’m accountable for something. And while I’ve messed around with it before, this is truly the first time I’m actually making a playable game of any sort with it and my chance to see what the engine is capable of producing.

I decided to salvage a design idea I had for a solo TTRPG I hadn’t gotten around to making - basically become John McClane fumbling around Nakatomi Plaza in Die Hard. I also had always wanted to try my hand at making a Metroidvania… and here we are with KITSUNE PLAZA.

So far so good! I spent the whole day making a tilesheet with an office theme and a sprite for the playable character. It was super fun to see it loaded in the game and seeing the little guy run around! Also learned a lot about making workable tilesets. I do have some pixel art experience so at least that wasn’t much of a learning curve.

The office tileset is okay-looking so far, but I think it can be improved. Besides I should also think about level and map design as I still haven’t done that yet.

I will be publishing a playable build at the end of the day during this gamejam, or at least I will try to if I’m not wasted too much. (It helps that I’m currently unemployed as well.) So if you want to see how I’m getting on, you can just check the project page.
