Day 2 of MVM23 - I manage to flush the game

I got an idea before I went to bed last night but was too tired to implement it. So when I woke up this morning, first thing I did was to make it happen.

And what idea was that you ask? That would be making the toilet the save room of the game and the act of saving itself is… well, you can take a look for yourself in the video (or play the web demo!) 😅

So with that concept flushed out of my system I got back to what I was supposed to be doing, which is to design a map for the game. Took me longer than I thought because I somehow I figured MS Excel would be the best app to do it in… yeah, um. Maybe not. Anyway…. HOURS LATER and I have this!

The map represents my target for content completion in the game by the end of the month, which I based off of yumaika’s tips in his blogpost about taking part in MVM.

For a beginner, he recommends setting these targets:

  • 1 boss, 1 biome
  • 2-3 enemies
  • 2 upgrades

That seemed like a good goal for me so that’s what I had in mind while designing the map. However, I couldn’t resist putting in an extra boss. I’m going to make that an optional stretch goal for myself for if I have time, otherwise I’d feel okay if I didn’t manage to get him in.

That’s it for today I think. Not sure how much I’ll get done tomorrow since I’m tutoring some kids but if I have the time I’ll focus on laying some placeholder tiles to make the rooms of my map. That way, at least I can get the platforming parts playable sooner and see if they actually work and are fun to play in. And at least the building will be explorable by then.
